Five from five in A Grade - May 10th - Collegians 15.9-99 def. Old Scotch 12.10-82

A Grade

Round 3 vs Xavier

It was a windy, scrappy day at Toorak park and the game reflected just that. The game was played in a very scrappy fashion and was hard fought by both teams till the very end. Collegians were tested for the first time this year and although failed to play the fast, high skill footy we are used to still managed to fight and scrap their way to a good win. James Fry was missing as he was attending a mates wedding and Konda was a late call up for the Zebras in the VFL. Damien Adkins also missed due to injury. Drew Dunlop was brought back into the side after unluckily being left out on Thursday night, as well as Nick Roach who played his first game for the year.

Huw Apted was a late call up for chipper and made his debut for the club coming up from the Under 19’s.

Xav’s won the toss and chose to kick into the strong breeze in the first quarter. Collegians went into the main break frustrated after skill errors cost them a few opportunities but still in front. Xav’s played strong running football and dominated the clearances with link up handball out of the backline and a lot of numbers around and behind the footy. At the half time siren there was a heated exchange of words between Jorgy and a couple of the Xav’s but all fizzled out.

The second half was not much different, a true scrap right to the end. Xav’s continued to run the ball and dominate the stoppages, and Collegians continued to manage to keep their noses in front. A big hit on Eddie Malone in the final quarter sent the big mans legs to jelly as he fought his way off the field. The game went right down to the wire and took a little bit of magic form Riesy who slotted a nicely weighted drop punt from the boundary to set the collegians alight. Blummers sealed the deal with a mark and goal straight in front.

It was a good win for us, we showed we can fight and scrap our way to a win and are looking forward De La next week at the Harry Trott.

Round 4 The Seconds report - Collegians v De La Salle.

An improved performance this week from the boys but unfortunately fell away in the last quarter. During the week we work hard at training to iron out some of our problems. I believe that the boys worked very hard this week to play a more team orientated game and for 70% of the game we applied it. But when the game was on the line in the last quarter and 10 minutes in the second quarter we fell back to our old habits and this is where the game was lost. The work rate was a lot better and the boy could be proud of the improvement for last week. We have a big week coming up against Old Scotch in which is a must win for this side.

Under 19s

Round 4 saw the unders playing Old Melbournians in good conditions at the Junction Oval.

Old Melbournians proved they are one of the better sides in the competition as they comfortably held sway all day in a game that was possibly closer than the score board indicated. Old Melbournians were able to use their height and long kicking to good advantage against a committed Collegians side who looked in need of a good target up forward.

A good 4 quarter effort was put in by Jack Parsons who worked tirelessly on the ball all day. Good support down back came from the fast moving Sam Cutts with speedy Nick Thompson getting plenty of it around the packs. Despite the side being soundly beaten on the scoreboard good signs were emerging as the Collegians game plan to share the ball around started to take shape. Encouraging signs were also evident from Tom Bulling showing some dash across half forward and Colin Williams displaying good poise at full back. But it was not enough against strong opposition and at the end of the day Collegians went down by 97 points, 20-14 to 5-7.

Best for Collegians were: Parsons Cutts Thompson Kamener Martyn & Jager

Goals : Bulling 2 Bird Corp Parsons

Next week we take on Old Brighton at Brighton Beach ground

Club XVIII (Division 1) , Round 4 - De la Salle V Collegians

The Clubbies were keen to make amends for a poor start the previous week against Xav's (2) and make a statement to the other 11 clubs. Unfortunately, our energy and enthusiasm was left on the track on Thursday night and De La Salle were allowed to pile on 5 goals to nil in the first quarter. Although, we won the following 3 quarters and had many more scoring shots we lost the game by two goals. The Clubbies have now won 14 of 16 quarters but we only have a disappointing 2 wins on the board. The 2 'lost' quarters have been the first quarter from the last two matches and the Clubbies will be desperate to start well this week. The last 2 weeks clearly illustrate that only hard work across 4 quarters for each of the remaining games will be required to play finals football.

Best - Schinkield, T Baxter, Moona, B McDonough, M Day, N James

CHANGING OF THE GUARD AT COLLEGIANS.

Chris Blumfield - Captain for 2008

In front of one of the biggest Thursday night crowds ever at the club our captain for 2008 was announced.

The honour of announcing the captaincy was bestowed on outgoing captain Cam Unsworth. With much delight and understandably much emotion, Chris Blumfield was appointed Captain.

Chris is an outstanding choice, having come via Wesley and our Under19's, to become an elite midfielder in the competition, as showed by his selection in the Under 23 All Australian Side last year. The respect Chris has amongst our playing group and within the club is enormous. I'm sure Chris will do a terrific job and we wish him every success.

Cam leaves the role being the equal longest serving captain in the history of the club. Appointed as a 20 year old seven years ago , he has helped steer the club through a number of highs and lows and has done an outstanding job. Even whilst suffering longterm injuries his committment never wavered. Cam has given Chris his full support and will dedicate himself to ensuring he himself, has an oustanding 2008 season.

Vice captains are Jono Dixon and Fergus Watts who will no doubt be great support to Chris. Congratulation boys.
